From benches and floors to barriers and objects, how do ordinary forms regulate our bodies and movements? Shibuya sees huge crowds every day. How are we encouraged to use the city—and to stay? Signs such as “No Street Vending” or “No Skateboarding” make restrictions explicit, while other forms of urban design work more subtly, limiting actions through physical and sensory experience. These unspoken instructions—“This is how this place is meant to be used”—may shape our behavior without us noticing, even becoming common sense. By observing these spatial messages, we will consider how we relate to the city. Along the way, we will introduce examples of people responding to such environments with humor and resourcefulness.
