スティーブ・ジョブズがコンピュータは表現のための medium だと述べている箇所、抜き書きするとこう。

"I don't think that most of the really best people that I've worked with have worked with computers for the sake of working with computers. They've worked with computers because they are the medium that is best capable of transmitting some feeling that you have that you want to share with other people."

前半部分の「優れた人はコンピュータを使うことを目的にコンピュータを使っているわけではない」という箇所、自分はグリーンバーグというか Art for art's sake みたいなのを想起しちゃうんだけど、グリーンバーグにとって medium という語は、感情やアイデアを媒介するためのなにかではなくて、芸術のための素材というかもっと即物的なニュアンスがあるとおもう。 ジョブズが対比するのは、コンピュータを使うためにコンピュータを使うという自足性と、感情を他者とシェアするということで、前者には表現を動機づけるものがないが後者にはあり、そのときに medium としてのコンピュータが必要になる。

グリーンバーグ的な medium とジョブズの言う medium は、発想がちょうど逆だと感じる。
